A landfill in Cikeas Udik Village, Gunungputri, Bogor Regency, has caught fire. The blaze has been ongoing since last week and was temporarily extinguished, but smoke has now re-emerged.

“It is a fire at the Cikeas landfill. The incident occurred on 8 July, and handling was only completed yesterday, 14 July. The terrain posed challenges, as it is located on the banks of the Cikeas River,” said Lukman Habibi, Deputy Commander of the Bogor Regency Fire Department’s Gunungputri Sector, on Thursday (16/7/2026).

Lukman stated the fire produced thick smoke, disturbing residents in nearby housing estates. The flames were extinguished on Tuesday (14/7), but smoke has now reappeared from the landfill.

“During the initial incident, the smoke was indeed thick and dense in the afternoon. That is why many residents from the surrounding housing estates complained,” Lukman said.

“The last update was on Tuesday, the fire was out and resolved. However, information today indicates smoke is emerging again,” he continued.

A similar account was provided by M Adam Hamdani, Head of Emergency at the Bogor Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). Adam said a BPBD team was deployed to the site today to handle the fire.

“The final situation is that the land area is still emitting smoke. It requires fire suppression units,” Adam said when contacted separately.

The fire was reported on Wednesday (8/7) evening at around 8.20 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. Handling was carried out by a joint team of firefighters and disaster volunteers from Bogor Regency. The fire is suspected to have been caused by the site manager burning a mattress on a waste pile up to 10 metres deep.

It was previously reported that a video of the allegedly illegal landfill fire in Cikeas Village, Gunungputri District, Bogor Regency, went viral on social media. The smoke from the waste pile drew complaints for disturbing residents.

Lukman Habib, Deputy Commander of the Gunungputri Fire Sector, said the event in the video occurred on Tuesday (14/7/2026). The billowing smoke visible in the video was the remnant of the fire being handled by the firefighting team.

“It is a fire at the Cikeas landfill,” Lukman said when asked for confirmation, Thursday (16/7).
