Fire at Hamzah Batik Malioboro Successfully Extinguished After Three Hours
The fire that engulfed Hamzah Batik in the Malioboro area, Yogyakarta City, was successfully extinguished after officers deployed 12 fire engines in the early hours of Monday (28/9).
The blaze was finally brought under control after burning the batik, craft, and souvenir shopping centre, located on Jalan Margo Mulyo, Gondomanan, Yogyakarta, for at least three hours.
The Head of Public Relations for the Yogyakarta City Police, Inspector Dani HS, stated that the firefighting process also involved one Water Cannon unit from the Yogyakarta City Police and one fire truck belonging to the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).
“The firefighting process involved 12 fire engines, 1 Water Cannon unit from the Yogyakarta City Police, and 1 fire truck belonging to the TNI,” Dani said in his statement on Monday morning.
Joint task forces finally managed to extinguish the flames at approximately 04:45 WIB. After the fire was out, officers continued the cooling process to ensure no remaining hotspots existed at the location.
Dani explained that the fire was known to have started around 01:30 WIB. At that time, a witness who was repairing a bathroom on the third floor with a colleague heard the sound of something bursting/exploding.
The witness then checked the source of the sound and found the fire in the kitchen area on the third floor. They subsequently reported the incident to the security personnel.
Security staff attempted to extinguish the fire using portable fire extinguishers (APAR). However, the flames grew larger, leading the report to be forwarded to the fire department and the Gondomanan Police Sector.
Dani confirmed that there were no casualties in the fire. The total material losses are not yet known.
