Since yesterday afternoon, a fire has been ravaging the Galuga Landfill area in the Cibungbulang District, Bogor, West Java. After 29 hours, joint task forces are still working to extinguish the flames.

“The latest update as of 10:12 PM tonight is that we are still continuing the firefighting efforts,” said the Regent of Bogor, Rudy Susmanto, on Tuesday (8/9/2026).

Rudy explained that the landfill serves waste from both Bogor City and Bogor Regency. The northern side receives waste from Bogor City, while the southern side handles waste from Bogor Regency.

“For the southern region, the fire points have almost completely disappeared. We are currently performing cooling operations at several points in the area, and hopefully, everything in the southern region will be resolved by morning,” he stated.

Rudy detailed the challenges faced during the firefighting efforts at Galuga Landfill. According to him, the primary difficulty is that managing the fire at Galuga is similar to dealing with peatland fires.

“Furthermore, based on the soil structure, the waste piles at Galuga Landfill have accumulated for decades; they are quite old. Consequently, the height of the waste mountain is nearly 10 metres or more,” he explained.

“Therefore, even when the visible fire points are gone, we must ensure that we turn the waste over and spray it down to the deepest layers to minimise the potential for the fire to resurface,” he added.

It is reported that the fire is estimated to have started on Monday (7/9) at approximately 5:00 PM. Initially, the fire emerged from a resident’s land before spreading into the landfill area.
