A fire erupted at the Cipayung Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Depok on Thursday night. Deputy Mayor of Depok, Chandra Rahmansyah, stated that the fire had flared up significantly, likely due to methane gas. “A hotspot appeared and then grew, probably because of methane gas in the area, so the fire just suddenly enlarged and spread like that,” Chandra said when met at the Cipayung TPA on Friday (17/7/2026). Chandra noted that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Several witnesses have also been questioned by the Depok Police. “It is still being investigated. Several witnesses were questioned by the police yesterday, and we have not yet received an update on the results. From the CCTV footage, it appears that there were no people at the point where the fire started,” he said. Despite the incident, Chandra confirmed there were no injuries or fatalities. He also stated that there was no damage to property. “We can confirm that there were no casualties or injuries, and also no material damage to property here,” he added. The fire occurred on Thursday (16/7) at 7:30 PM Western Indonesian Time. Head of the Depok Environment and Hygiene Agency, Reni Siti, said the fire originated from the bottom of a waste pile. “Based on the information, the incident happened at 7:30 PM. It seems the fire started from underneath,” Reni told reporters. She confirmed that the fire was extinguished by 10:52 PM and that the cause is still being investigated. “The cause is still under investigation. We have regular patrols here, so we were able to localise it quickly and prevent it from spreading,” she said.
