Fire at Depok's Cipayung Landfill Extinguished, Cooling Operations Underway

A major fire broke out at the Cipayung final waste disposal site (TPA) in Depok. The fire has now been extinguished.

The fire occurred on Thursday (16/7/2026) at 19:30 WIB. The Head of Depok’s Environment and Cleanliness Agency (LHK), Reni Siti, said the point of ignition came from beneath the waste pile.

“The incident, based on information, happened at 19:30. It appears to have started from below,” Reni told reporters on Thursday (16/7).

Reni said the cause of the fire was not yet known. Firefighters are currently localising the blaze to prevent it from spreading.

“The cause still needs to be investigated. We do have patrols here, so we were able to anticipate it and localise it quickly so it did not spread,” she explained.

Reni said that as of 22:52 WIB the fire had been extinguished. Firefighters are now carrying out cooling operations to prevent any sparks from re-emerging.

“Thankfully it is out now, but we are in the cooling process so there are no more sparks, because there was clearly a trigger. We will keep dousing it so it gets colder and stays extinguished, because we don’t know what is inside,” she said.

Reni has asked the firefighters to continue cooling operations until 06:00 WIB tomorrow morning to ensure the fire has been fully extinguished.

“We have asked for it to be doused until morning, until we feel it is truly safe. The cooling will continue until morning, until around 06:00 WIB, so we can be even more certain,” she concluded.
