Fire at Depok's Cipayung Landfill Extinguished, Cooling Operations Underway
A major fire at the Cipayung landfill in Depok has been extinguished. The blaze broke out on Thursday (16/7/2026) at 19:30 WIB. Head of the Depok Environment and Hygiene Agency, Reni Siti, said the fire originated from the bottom of a waste pile. “Based on the information, the incident occurred at 19:30. It seems to have come from below,” Reni told journalists on Thursday. Reni said the cause of the fire is not yet known. Firefighters are currently working to localise the area to prevent the fire from spreading. “We still need to investigate the cause first. Because actually we also have patrols here. So, we can anticipate and quickly localise it so it doesn’t spread,” she explained. Reni said that as of 22:50 WIB the fire had been extinguished. Firefighters are currently carrying out cooling operations to prevent any sparks from re-emerging. “Alhamdulillah, it is now extinguished, but we are currently in the cooling process to prevent any more sparks, because there is clearly a trigger. We will continue to spray water to make it cooler and ensure it is fully extinguished. Because we don’t know what is inside,” she said. Reni has asked firefighters to continue cooling operations until 06:00 WIB the following morning to ensure the fire is completely out. “And today I have asked for it to continue to be sprayed until morning. Until we feel that it is truly safe. We have requested cooling until morning. Until tomorrow morning, at 06:00 WIB, so we can be more certain,” she concluded.
