A fire occurred at the BPD DIY bank office in Wirobrajan, Yogyakarta City on Thursday (12 March) evening. The incident was allegedly triggered by an electrical transformer explosion in front of the bank. As a result of the incident, at least six motorcycles were destroyed by fire.

Ipda Anton Budi Susilo, Public Relations Officer of Yogyakarta Metropolitan Police, stated that the incident was reported at approximately 20:25 WIB. Members of Wirobrajan Police Subdistrict who received the information immediately proceeded to the scene.

“The members of Wirobrajan Police Subdistrict, led by the Chief, immediately went to the scene, gathered information and attempted to extinguish the fire using portable fire extinguishers before fire service personnel arrived,” Anton stated on Thursday (12 March 2026).

According to him, the fire was successfully extinguished after three fire service units from Yogyakarta City and Bantul arrived at the location. The extinguishing process lasted approximately 30 minutes until the fire was brought under control.

Based on an inspection at the scene, the fire caused six motorcycles from BPD DIY Bank’s inventory to burn. The vehicles consisted of two PCX units, one ADV unit, one Beat unit, one Stylo unit, and one Vario 125 unit.

“Regarding damage, six two-wheeled vehicles from the bank’s inventory burned, consisting of two PCX units, one ADV unit, one Beat unit, one Stylo unit, and one Vario 125 unit,” he said.

In addition to the vehicles, the fire also damaged the bank’s front signage measuring approximately 15 metres by 6 metres. Two electrical transformers and two tents at the location were also destroyed.

Based on witness statements, the incident began when one of the electrical cables on a pole in front of the bank became loose and caused an explosion and sparks. Shortly thereafter, the transformer on a nearby pole also caught fire, with the sparks falling below and striking a tent in the area.

“According to witness statements, initially an electrical cable on a pole became loose causing an explosion and sparks. After that, the transformer on the adjacent pole also caught fire,” Anton said.

“The sparks fell below and burned the tent at the location, causing the fire to spread and reach the front wall of the bank. Security personnel attempted to extinguish it, but the fire was only brought under control after the fire service arrived,” he added.

Furthermore, Anton explained that there were no casualties in the incident.

“There were no casualties in this incident. The preliminary assessment is that the fire originated from an electrical short circuit. The extent of material losses is still being documented,” he concluded.
