The West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Sudin Gulkarmat) said staff were still sweeping the area after extinguishment to ensure there are no hotspots in other parts of the building. ‘From what I can observe upstairs, it’s only in the auditorium,’ said Syaiful Kahfi, Head of Operations, at the Binus Anggrek Campus in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, on Friday (22 May 2026).

He explained the fire was reported around 05:30 WIB. In response, Sudin Gulkarmat West Jakarta deployed 12 fire engines and about 60 personnel to the site. ‘The news came from the Kebon Jeruk task force: at 05:30 there was an incident at the Binus building; we launched 12 vehicles, about 60 personnel,’ he said.

He added that the blaze was located in the auditorium on the 5th floor. When responders arrived, the room was already filled with thick smoke, hindering firefighting. ‘By the time we arrived, the building on the 5th floor was heavily smoky. We had to enter using breathing apparatus before we could fight the fire and search for hotspots,’ he explained.

Nevertheless, the fire is now said to be nearing containment. Officers are still sweeping the area to extinguish small embers. ‘Cooling down has passed. There are still some embers to extinguish, but there are no large hotspots left,’ he noted.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, with police on site to conduct further investigations. ‘The cause is not yet known and is being processed with the police,’ he added.
