The public has been shaken by a group of prospective Umrah pilgrims who stormed the Hanania Group office after allegedly falling victim to fraud and embezzlement. The victims are demanding accountability from Hanania Group, as the agency failed to depart pilgrims who had been scheduled since March 2024.

Financial losses have reached a staggering amount; police have confirmed losses of Rp4.2 billion involving 38 victims. However, authorities suspect there may be many more victims who have yet to report the incident.

Fira, one of the victims of the Hanania Group travel scam, revealed that she suffered losses amounting to Rp115,600,000, intended for four people. Fira had planned to travel to the Holy Land with her mother and two siblings. Following the incident, Fira shared that her mother had been deeply hoping to perform Umrah alongside her three children.

Fira’s parents had struggled immensely to save the necessary funds. “My mother was so hopeful. That money was saved by my mother; my father worked from dawn until dusk, enduring insults and even accidents; it was a true struggle,” she stated during an appearance on Denny Sumargo’s YouTube programme, ‘CURHAT BANG’.

Fira initially remained optimistic that the funds would be returned. However, her mother has reached a point of resignation and acceptance, exhausted by the ongoing legal pursuit. “I was still thinking positively that it would definitely be returned from some source of sustenance. But so far, they are comfortably suggesting a refund within a two-year period. It has reached the point where my mother is tired and has simply accepted it,” Fira explained.

Denny Sumargo recounted his encounter with an individual sharing their grievances as a victim of this travel scam. Initially, he did not pay much attention due to his busy schedule, but later reflected on the gravity of the situation, noting the large number of victims and the massive amount of money involved. He noted that he had not realised the scale of the case as it had not gone viral on social media, but expressed outrage that the perpetrators could act so heartlessly by taking money earned through the hard struggles of many people.
