Fiorentina vs Jagiellonia: Moise Kean and Fabbian Call the Match Against Jagiellonia a Valuable Lesson
Two Fiorentina players, Moise Kean and Giovanni Fabbian, agreed that the aggregate 5-4 victory over Jagiellonia in the UEFA Conference League was a “valuable lesson”. La Viola almost suffered an embarrassing defeat after squandering a three-goal lead from the first leg before eventually securing a place in the last 16 through extra time.
After winning 3-0 in Poland last week, Fiorentina seemed to lose control at home. Bartosz Mazurek’s hat-trick in the 49th minute made the aggregate score level and forced the match to go into extra time. Although Nicolò Fagioli and a confusing “rebound” goal managed to secure Fiorentina’s position, the fatal mistake by David De Gea in the final minutes remained a dark mark in the match.
Moise Kean admitted that his team was not at their best mentally. He said that physical fatigue was one of the factors, but not an excuse for losing concentration.
“We felt a little tired when we entered the match, but we should have been able to think more clearly than this,” Kean told Sky Sport Italia.
He emphasized the importance of evaluating mistakes so that they do not happen again. “We must always learn from our mistakes. It’s all about mentality, we just need to improve our ability in situations like this,” he added.
One of the most confusing moments in the match was a goal from a corner kick that was initially awarded to Kean. In the replay, the ball appeared to bounce off Fabbian’s foot before hitting Jagiellonia midfielder Taras Romanczuk.
“I don’t know who scored that goal, Fabbian told me that he deflected it. The most important thing is that we scored and qualified,” said Kean, shrugging his shoulders.
Fabbian himself confirmed that he did touch the ball, although he was not sure if it was pure instinct or luck.
“In that goal, the ball clearly hit me. I don’t know if it was instinct or what, but I stuck my foot out there,” explained Fabbian.
In line with Kean, Fabbian felt disappointed that Fiorentina had to be in a risky situation. According to him, underestimating the opponent on paper is a fatal mistake in modern football.
“It’s disappointing that we could get into a situation like this, we should have been able to handle it better. There are moments in football when you lose concentration because the match seems easy on paper, but there is no such thing in today’s game. I think this will be a very valuable lesson,” Fabbian concluded.
Fiorentina now has to quickly improve before the draw for the last 16 is held on February 27, to ensure that a similar poor performance does not happen again. (Football Italia/Z-2)
