Jakarta, VIVA – Bank Indonesia (BI) has launched the implementation of cross-border QRIS for the People’s Republic of China (PRC) during the unveiling of the Indonesian Digital Innovation Centre (PIDI). With the connection between QRIS and China’s QR system, people can transact easily via mobile phones. This collaboration between the two countries’ payment systems stems from trade transactions between Indonesia and China reaching US$18 billion. Director of Technology Product and Operation and Acting Director of Finance Risk and Management at Finnet Indonesia (Finpay), Apep Noormansyah, stated that the soft launch of cross-border QRIS in China marks a new milestone in the transformation of Indonesia’s digital payment system at the international level. This strategic step opens up convenience for Indonesians in China, whether tourists or business actors, to make instant transactions simply by scanning a QR code, without the hassle of exchanging cash or using more complicated conventional payment methods. “The presence of QRIS in China also demonstrates the readiness of the national digital infrastructure in supporting regional payment system connectivity that is increasingly integrated in the era of the global digital economy,” Apep said in a written statement, quoted on Monday, 11 May 2026. Apep continued that the expansion of QRIS use in China is seen as an important part of efforts to strengthen a secure, fast, and transparent cross-border transaction ecosystem. With an increasingly connected payment system, Indonesians can now transact at various merchants in China using domestic payment applications that are linked to QRIS services. This convenience is expected to increase the comfort of Indonesians when travelling abroad, especially to China, which is one of the world’s largest trading hubs and international travel destinations. He added that users no longer have to worry about the risks of carrying large amounts of cash or additional costs from foreign currency exchanges. Apep stated that the implementation of cross-border QRIS also reflects the development of the modern society’s digital lifestyle, which increasingly relies on non-cash transactions in various activities. The QR-based payment system is considered capable of providing higher efficiency because the transaction process occurs in real time and is digitally integrated.
