Financial Management Tips for Eid to Avoid Overspending, According to Unair Economist
SURABAYA — Consumer spending typically increases ahead of Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Indonesians purchase various items such as new clothing, traditional cakes, and travel provisions. The traditions of halalbihalal gatherings, reunions, and family visits also encourage greater expenditures compared to ordinary days.
According to an economist, various activities typical of Eid increase household spending requirements. Activities such as travelling home, halalbihalal celebrations, and preparing meals for guests drive additional expenditure.
“Consumption is not always consumptive. From an economic perspective, consumptive behaviour occurs when someone purchases something not based on necessity, but on desire. This is usually influenced by trends, the desire to improve social status, or simply following peer pressure,” the economist explained on Wednesday, 18 March 2026.
The expert cited a common mistake before Eid: failing to prioritise essential needs. Households tend to fulfil various wants without establishing priorities.
According to Islamic economic principles, needs are divided into three levels. However, many people focus more on fulfilling desires. “Because what is called a desire, when fulfilled, actually costs more than the benefit it provides,” the economist stated.
