JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Finance has responded to reports regarding Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa’s recording of an underpayment of Rp 50 million in his Annual Income Tax Return.

Head of the Bureau of Communication and Information Services at the Ministry of Finance, Deni Surjantoro, emphasised that the tax reporting was carried out in accordance with the rules.

“The Finance Minister, as a taxpayer, has reported his Annual Tax Return on time and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” Deni stated in an official release on Friday (27/3/2026).

The tax system combines all income into a single calculation. Meanwhile, tax withholding is performed separately by each employer.

This difference can result in a discrepancy between the taxes already withheld and the taxes that must be paid. The progressive tax rate also contributes to the emergence of an underpayment status.

The government is developing the Coretax system to enhance the accuracy of reporting. This system automatically integrates tax data, including withholding certificates.

With this integration, Annual Tax Return reporting is expected to be more accurate and complete.

“This explanation is provided by the government to correct public perceptions and to ensure transparency in tax reporting, including by state officials,” Deni explained.
