Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara considers economic stability a key factor in Indonesia’s progress.

He made the remarks at the Danantara Technology Innovation Investment Forum (DTIIF) 2026 in Jakarta on Monday (26 October 2026). “Stability in the economy and stability in our social activities are very important prerequisites,” Suahasil said.

Suahasil said economic stability had shaped his approach to managing the state budget. Before becoming finance minister, he had served as deputy finance minister since October 2019.

He explained the importance of stability by comparing it to someone trying to reach a destination more quickly by bicycle. If the bicycle is unstable, the person may still arrive, but it will take longer.

“If the bicycle wobbles, you might still get there, but it will take longer and require more effort. A stable bicycle, however, is a prerequisite for getting from point A to point B more quickly. I have always had that mindset,” he said.

Since taking office as finance minister on 14 September 2026, Suahasil has said he will keep the state budget deficit below 3% of GDP, in line with the State Finance Law.

At the end of September 2026, the deficit stood at Rp319 trillion, or 1.24% of gross domestic product (GDP).

After being sworn in to replace Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Suahasil also reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the stability of the state budget.

“We hope this will continue to shape, particularly at the Ministry of Finance, how we formulate fiscal policy, allocate the budget, and engage with all other parts of government and with the public,” he said.
