Finance Minister Purbaya Satisfied with Q1 2026 Economic Growth of 5.61 Percent
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa is pleased with Indonesia’s economic growth achievement in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 5.61 percent year-on-year (yoy) based on the release from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). “I’m not stressed, even though I couldn’t sleep last night, wondering if it would be achieved or not, but then 5.61 percent, wow, I have to treat everyone,” said Purbaya at the APBN KiTa Press Conference at the Ministry of Finance Office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 5 May 2026. According to Purbaya, this achievement is a major accomplishment amid global economic uncertainties. He views the growth as indicating that Indonesia is beginning to emerge from the trend of growth around 5 percent, which has often been referred to as a curse. He stated that the 5.61 percent growth aligns with the government’s target and is higher than the fourth quarter of 2025 achievement of 5.39 percent. He sees this as a signal that the economy is starting to move faster. Nevertheless, Purbaya reminded that challenges ahead remain substantial because the unstable global conditions continue to pose risks to the domestic economy. He stated that the government will continue to encourage sectors that are still resilient, particularly export-oriented companies, to remain competitive in the global market. The BPS economic growth data exceeded predictions from economic institutions. The Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Indonesia had previously predicted that Indonesia’s economy in the first quarter of 2026 would grow by 5.25-5.35 percent. Meanwhile, the Institute for Economic and Social Research at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia (LPEM FEB UI) projected that Indonesia’s economy would grow by 5.48 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026.
