Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa believes that the current global economic uncertainty is becoming ever more unclear as to when it will find a bright spot. He stated that this issue is triggered by the unending war between the United States and Iran, compounded by ongoing global trade pressures that continue to slow the world economy. “There is now an unclear uncertainty; the war is unclear, the world economy is slowing, sentiments easily reverse,” said Purbaya at the Juanda I Building of the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday (21/4/2026). He even revealed that US Finance Minister Scott Bessent conveyed a special appeal to finance ministers and central bank governors worldwide to anticipate the unending war in the near term. However, he did not clarify the specific message conveyed. “So from what I saw yesterday, Scott Bessent urged ministers or central bank governors worldwide to act in a certain way; it seems the agreement was never reached because they position Iran as the country losing the war,” said Purbaya. Purbaya assesses that the war in the Middle East between the US-Israel and Iran will enter a medium-to-long-term period. Nevertheless, he believes the US needs to resolve the war by September 2026 before the US midterm elections. “If that’s the case, when will they meet? So I think this will still take a long time, possibly until September, because they must finish the war before the elections there,” stated Purbaya.
