Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa received a loan offer from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank amounting to US$25–30 billion to bolster fiscal strength amid global economic uncertainties, but he rejected it. The offer was presented during his visit to Washington D.C., United States, some time ago.

“I told him, right now I don’t need it because I already have reserves of nearly US$25 billion for our country ourselves. So it’s safe,” said Purbaya when met at his office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.

He stated that the loan was not yet necessary because the buffer of the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) remains strong. Purbaya mentioned that the government has a Budget Surplus Balance (SAL) of around Rp420 trillion, equivalent to nearly US$25 billion.

Purbaya recounted that the rejection was met with displeased expressions from the leaders of both institutions. According to him, this response arose because the lending institutions missed out on potential income from debt interest.

According to him, the government is striving to optimise existing fiscal capacity before deciding to take on external financing. Every policy, he said, is designed based on calculated impact assessments, not mere estimates.
