Finance Minister Purbaya Has Filed His Tax Return, Admits Underpayment of Rp50 Million!
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has admitted to filing his annual personal income tax notification (SPT Tahunan PPh). During the filing process, he was found to have underpaid by Rp50 million.
According to him, underpayment in tax filings is a common occurrence, particularly for taxpayers with more than one source of income.
“If you work in many places, you’re almost certainly going to underpay. Unless it’s just one place,” Purbaya stated at the Ministry of Finance office in Jakarta on Wednesday (25/3/2026).
Purbaya gave an example: when he was still serving as Chairman of the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) Board of Commissioners, he never encountered an underpayment.
However, he explained that now, because his 2025 income came from more than one source—partly from LPS and partly from his position as state treasurer—there is an underpayment issue in this SPT.
“Now, I still have part from LPS, part from here (Ministry of Finance),” he said.
When asked further about the amount of the shortfall, Purbaya estimated it to be around Rp50 million.
“It’s about Rp50 million (underpaid),” Purbaya replied.
Not only that, Purbaya admitted that he was assisted by tax officials in the SPT annual filing process, which he said was not entirely smooth.
“I didn’t fill it out myself; I was accompanied by tax people. Sometimes the system goes in circles,” he said.
Therefore, Purbaya believes that further improvements are needed in the software aspect of the Coretax system. This way, taxpayers, including himself, can file their tax obligations easily within the given deadline.
“And for the Coretax software itself, we need to keep improving it. Here, there’s a team for continuous fixes, right?” he said.
