Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has affirmed that the budget for the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme remains secure. The widely scrutinised programme, according to him, will not be subject to the government’s planned budget cuts amid global economic dynamics.

“The MBG programme budget remains secure,” said Purbaya during a visit to Yogyakarta on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

Despite recent announcements by President Prabowo regarding budget adjustments, Purbaya assured that the government would continue supporting the programme’s operation, albeit with technical evaluations. “We will ensure the implementation of the MBG programme functions far better than before.”

During a visit to a traditional market in Yogyakarta, Purbaya responded to concerns raised by women who approached him regarding the MBG programme. One woman initially proposed to Purbaya that the MBG be discontinued, arguing it was unfair and created inequality.

“Sir, please stop the MBG programme; it’s unfair and creates much inequality. If possible, could we receive cash assistance instead, sir?” said one woman at the market. A second woman complained to Purbaya that her child was reluctant to eat the meals provided under the MBG programme.

Responding to these concerns, Purbaya pledged to convey the grievances directly to President Prabowo. He stated that the government’s current focus is to make the programme operate more effectively. “Let us make it effective, and I will relay this to the President,” he said.
