Finance Minister Purbaya Backs Destry Damayanti as Sole Candidate for BI Governor

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has responded positively to President Prabowo Subianto’s proposal of Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for Governor of Bank Indonesia. Purbaya said he has frequently coordinated with Destry and enjoys a good working relationship with her.

“It’s good, she has considerable experience. And I am quite close to her,” Purbaya said in Jakarta on Tuesday (11/8), responding to the proposed name for the central bank leadership.

Purbaya assessed that Destry Damayanti’s performance is highly capable. The two are known to have worked together intensively when Purbaya served as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), where Destry was an ex officio member from the central bank.

“When I was Chairman of the LPS Board of Commissioners, she was ex officio from the central bank, so I think it’s good. We are used to coordinating and working well together, so there is no problem,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the smooth coordination that has been established will continue in the future, ensuring that the synergy between the Ministry of Finance and Bank Indonesia can be well maintained.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto sent a Presidential Letter to the House of Representatives (DPR RI) to nominate Destry Damayanti as the definitive Governor of Bank Indonesia. Destry is currently serving as Acting Governor of Bank Indonesia.

The Presidential Letter was delivered directly by Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi to the DPR leadership on Monday (10/8). Destry is the sole name proposed by the President to lead the monetary authority. The letter was handed to DPR Speaker Puan Maharani and Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad to be processed further in accordance with legislative mechanisms.
