Finally, Huawei Mate Pro Series Makes "Comeback" in Indonesia After 5-Year Hiatus
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Huawei has finally brought the Mate numeric series back to Indonesia after an absence of around five years. The series makes its comeback through the launch of the Mate 80 Pro in the country on Thursday (16/4/2026). Since returning to enliven the Indonesian market last year, the Mate series brought was limited to the foldable XT and X models. This Chinese technology company last released the numeric Mate series, including the Mate Pro, in 2020 through the Mate 40 Pro. “The Mate (numeric) was previously only launched in China. After re-entering the global launch, of course we in Indonesia are following the global strategy. And now we are launching the Mate 80 Pro for the first time in Indonesia after a long time,” said Senior Retail Manager of Huawei Device Indonesia, Edy Supartono, on the sidelines of the launch event in Central Jakarta. Edy stated that Huawei had planned the entry of the Mate numeric series since its first comeback to Indonesia last year. “Since last year, our strategy has been to bring all lines from all smartphone categories to Indonesia,” said Edy. Although smartphone products were absent since 2022, Huawei still maintains a user base in Indonesia. Edy said that during the hiatus, they continued to nurture the loyal user community by introducing the full Huawei ecosystem, such as tablets and wearables. Besides Huawei, 2025 marks a comeback moment for several smartphone brands in Indonesia. Based on KompasTekno records, three global smartphone brands decided to fully operate again in the Indonesian market, namely Huawei, Honor, and Motorola. At that time, those phones became one of the top choices for mobile photography enthusiasts thanks to the camera system developed in collaboration with Leica. The “DNA” of photography in the Mate series is still passed down to the Mate 80 Pro. Although no longer collaborating with Leica, the Mate 80 Pro continues to highlight the camera aspect.
