Although the situation in Doha has intensified due to the bombing incident, local authorities are still seeking to assert their status as the rightful hosts until an official decision is announced by the government. This geopolitical tension has triggered a clash of interests among the world football federations, who are racing against time to decide the fate of the match. The issue is complicated by the large financial commitments already tied up by CONMEBOL. The South American football governing body, led by Alejandro Dominguez, had previously chosen to relocate the match to the Middle East for financial gain, rather than staging it on the continent. The uncertainty has prompted the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to actively seek an exit strategy. Considering the match is part of the important World Cup calendar for North America, the RFEF hopes for venue certainty as soon as possible. Under UEFA, Spain does not want to lose the momentum of this crucial test. Spain’s national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, emphasised the urgency in an interview with Spanish Public Radio (RNE) on Monday:
