Indonesia is shrouded in mourning. President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto personally led the military funeral ceremony of the 6th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, General (Retired) Try Sutrisno, at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery (TMP) in South Jakarta on Monday (2 March 2026).

The presence of President Prabowo as Inspector of Ceremony affirmed Try Sutrisno’s position as a “Complete Soldier” who dedicated his entire life to national sovereignty. Amid the light rain accompanying the procession, honour volleys were fired as a final salute to the general, who was known for his remarkable humility.

Throughout his career, Try Sutrisno was more than just a high-ranking state official. He was a symbol of boundless loyalty. From his appointment as aide to President Suharto to reaching the pinnacle of his military career as ABRI Commander and subsequently Vice President (1993-1998), Try never lost his identity as a humble figure.

“He is a true example that power does not have to change one’s character. His loyalty to Pancasila and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is a legacy we must preserve,” said President Prabowo in his brief remarks at the late general’s grave.

The ceremony at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery also served as a gathering point for national figures. Present were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and senior politician Pramono Anung. Both offered similar tributes: Try Sutrisno was a communications bridge capable of embracing all segments of society.

Airlangga recalled the late general as a figure who always emphasised the importance of national stability above group interests. Meanwhile, Pramono Anung referred to the late general as a “Teacher of the Nation” whose advice was always sought when political situations became heated.

The passing of Try Sutrisno leaves a significant gap in the history of national leadership. In this modern era, his exemplary conduct in maintaining integrity and simplicity serves as a compass for young generations, particularly within the TNI and government.

The government has declared a period of national mourning with flags at half-mast as a mark of respect for the true statesman who now rests peacefully on Indonesian soil.
