Final Hurdle for KF-21 Boramae Fighter: DAPA Certification
Official approval from the Defence Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA) is the final hurdle for the KF-21 Boramae fighter jet before it enters frontline service this year. The domestically produced South Korean jet is set to receive initial type certification this week following a government review. DAPA will grant the type certification to Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) after reviewing the Boramae’s airworthiness, described as the ‘final official recognition’ of the 4.5-generation Block 1 aircraft, according to a report from Aviation Week. The military airworthiness certification review commenced in April 2021 and will continue until April 2026. The review evaluated the fighter jet’s operational capabilities, specifically whether the Boramae can protect pilots and operate safely, including in extreme environmental and flight conditions. The review also assessed the aircraft’s mission performance. DAPA confirmed at the 89th programme development meeting this week that the KF-21 met a total of 745 inspection requirements across 14 different airworthiness categories.
