Filipino wins 11th leg of Tour of Philippines

MANILA (AP): Cyclist Enrique Domingo won yesterday's 11th
stage of the Tour of the Philippines, but Warren Davadilla kept
the overall lead by tying with his closest challenger, Arnel
Quirimit.

All three are members of the Philippine team.

Domingo completed the 194.9-kilometer (121.8-mile) stage from
Dagupan city in Pangasinan province to Vigan in Ilocos Sur,
farther north, in 4 hours, 47 minutes, 32 seconds, edging
breakaway partner Leonardo Basibas of the Northern Luzon team,
who came in two seconds later.

Domingo became the fourth rider to win two legs of the
competition.

Michael Gonowon of the Southern Luzon team came in third, four
seconds behind Basibas, followed by Seino Keita of Japan and
defending champion Wong Kam Po of Hong Kong.

By tying with Quirimit, Davadilla maintained his 9-second lead
in the overall race. Malaysia's Tsen Seong Hoong, who also
finished with the two leaders, stayed third overall.

They were part of a 23-man main pack that finished 7:53 after
Domingo.

Domingo led a shakeup in the overall standings, jumping to
fourth from sixth, just 3:05 behind Davadilla.

Gonzalo Espiritu of Pangasinan dropped from fourth to fifth.
Placido Valdez improved to sixth from seventh. Two-time tour
champion Carlo Guieb went to seventh from eighth.

Rookie Santy Barnachea, previously in fifth place, dropped to
eighth.

Shimbo Asao of Japan slipped from ninth place to 13th.

Today, the race enters the first of three decisive stages in
Baguio, a mountain resort city 1,400 meters (4,620 feet) above
sea level, including a 30-kilometer (18-mile) climb.

Tomorrow, the riders tackle a 199.7-kilometer (124-mile) stage
that features two downhill drives and two uphill climbs.

The third stage is a 27.5-kilometer (17.18-mile) individual
time trial through the winding Kennon road.

All 67 riders remaining from the starting roster of 84 were
able to finish yesterday's leg.
