Filipino, RI caddies wanted
KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Because of a shortage of golf caddies, the government will allow clubs in Sabah state on Borneo Island to import them from the Philippines and Indonesia.
The Federal Task Force on Foreign Workers said the clubs would have to pay an annual levy of US$288, Bernama news agency reported yesterday.
The statement did not specify the wages for caddies but manual workers from the two nations make about $12 to $20 daily. The caddies can be brought in and registered by either the clubs or club members.
Malaysian wages are higher than those in the Philippines or Indonesia and jobs are readily available, especially in the plantation, construction, services and factory sectors.
