Fifteen-Metre-High Slope Landslide Closes Gunungkidul–Klaten Route via Clongop
Heavy rainfall, intensifying since yesterday (3 March), caused the talut on the new Clongop road in Plasan, Watugajah, Gedangsari, Gunungkidul to collapse last night. As a result, the Gunungkidul–Klaten connection via Wedi-Gedangsari is closed completely due to being blocked by landslide material.
The Head of Emergency and Logistics at BPBD Gunungkidul, Edy Winarta, said the landslide occurred last night, Tuesday (3 March 2026) at around 21:00 WIB. As for casualties, Edy stated there were none.
“There are no casualties, but a 30-metre-long talut with a height of 15 metres collapsed and landslide material blocked the new Clongop road,” he said when contacted by reporters on Wednesday (4 March 2026).
Edy continued, in percentage terms, the road linking Wedi, Klaten, Central Java with Gedangsari, Gunungkidul is 80 per cent non-passable. Moreover, given the current weather, BPBD Gunungkidul is wary of potential further landslides.
“Therefore, the main linking road between Wedi, Klaten and Gedangsari, Gunungkidul is temporarily closed completely,” he added.
According to him, staff are still conducting an assessment at the site. Additionally, BPBD is awaiting heavy equipment to clear landslide material.
On the other hand, Edy said they have prepared an alternative route for motorists who normally travel along that corridor.
“There is an alternative route, already redirected via Jalan Jelok and Jalan Sampang,” he said.
