FIFA Introduces New Rule to Prevent Racism, Players Banned from Doing This
Racist conduct during a Benfica vs Real Madrid match brought Vinicius Jr and Gianluca Prestianni into sharp focus over recent weeks. Prestianni allegedly engaged in racist behaviour towards Vinicius Jr following his goal celebration in the 50th minute. In response, UEFA launched an investigation into the incident and ultimately sanctioned Prestianni, resulting in his absence during the second leg between the two teams on Wednesday when Real Madrid won 2-1 over Benfica.
The investigation was complicated by the lack of pitch-side audio recording capturing dialogue between the players, leaving insufficient conclusive evidence. Prestianni’s action of covering his mouth before speaking to Vinicius indicated that lip-reading alone could not serve as valid proof. Nevertheless, FIFA and IFAB are now seeking solutions to address the problem.
According to Diario AS, both governing bodies have agreed to take action against racist practices by prohibiting players from covering their mouths when speaking to opponents. This regulation has informally become known as the “Vinicius Law” following the dispute between Vinicius Jr and Gianluca Prestianni. The rule is planned to be completed before next summer’s World Cup and may be implemented at the four-yearly tournament.
FIFA has reaffirmed its commitment to combating racism, with this new policy representing a tangible demonstration of that determination. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has expressed personal support for the proposed regulation, stating: “If banning mouth covering can end insults like this, I will welcome it,” as cited by The Athletic. The measure is likely to be welcomed by Real Madrid, which continues to support Vinicius amid the ongoing UEFA investigation into the case.
