JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) has requested that the sexual violence case involving 16 students from the Faculty of Law (FH) at the University of Indonesia (UI) not be resolved solely through internal channels. Komnas Perempuan member Sondang Frikha Simanjuntak stated that the ethical code mechanisms in place at the university cannot replace the legal process for incidents of sexual violence. “Both can run in parallel. Handling that relies solely on internal channels can risk perpetuating impunity and may be imitated, sending the message that sexual violence on campus can be resolved internally,” she said in an official statement on Wednesday (15/4/2026). The regulation mandates the task force to follow up and does not rule out legal proceedings. “Therefore, strengthening the role of the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Higher Education Environment (Satgas PPKPT) at the University of Indonesia also needs full support from university leadership,” she added. Support for the Satgas PPKPT is considered important so that the ethical process can address the root of the problem and ensure recovery for the victims. “The formal legal process also needs to be opened as widely as possible for victims who choose the criminal route, without administrative obstacles and without pressure from the campus environment,” she stated. It was previously reported that 16 University of Indonesia (UI) students are suspected of sexually harassing a female student in the faculty.
