Festive Celebrations Welcome Ramadan 1447 Hijriah Across the Nation
In Java, the Dugderan festival is being held to welcome Ramadan. This year’s Dugderan carries a distinctive significance, serving as a symbol of interfaith harmony as it takes place amid the concurrent celebrations of Chinese New Year and the Lenten fasting period.
Moving to Kalimantan and Sulawesi, parades are being held to mark the arrival of the holy month. This year, the Tarhib and Koko’o traditions continue to be enthusiastically observed by local communities.
However, parts of Sumatra present a different picture this year. Communities in Aceh and North Sumatra, in particular, are still grappling with recovery efforts following recent natural disasters. This has not dampened their Ramadan spirit, however. Despite their constraints, residents continue to carry out the traditional cattle-slaughtering custom.
Each of these traditions carries its own meaning and manner of observance across the archipelago, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of Ramadan celebrations in Indonesia.
