A female student from the Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University (Unhas) was found dead in the campus area of the Engineering campus in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi. Police are investigating the cause of death.

“Yes, the victim was found dead, not a suicide,” said IPDA Andi Muhammad Alfian, head of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Tipidum) of the Gowa Police Resort, in an interview with CNNIndonesia.com on Tuesday (19/5).

The victim was found in the Engineering campus area on Monday (18/5) around 19:30 WITA.

Officers went to the location, coordinating with the Forensic Medical Team of South Sulawesi Regional Police and the INAFIS team of the Gowa Police to identify the remains.

“The victim was first found by two of her colleagues, then reported to the campus and to the police,” he said.

Alfian explained that preliminary examination indicated the deceased had the initials PJT (19); there were no signs of fracture or serious injuries on the body.

“From the condition of the body, there are no broken bones, no serious injuries,” he said.

However, Alfian admitted he did not yet know the exact cause of death, as the family refused to allow an autopsy on the body.

“There is a condition/disease that we do not know yet. It will not be autopsied because the father did not want his child autopsied,” he said.

The Unhas campus has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.

Voice message sent to parents beforehand

Hasanuddin University (Unhas) spoke on the death of the engineering student, initial PJT (19), who was found lifeless in the campus area.

“Yes, last night the victim was found by a friend, then reported to campus security,” said Ishaq Rahman, Head of Public Relations at Unhas, in a statement.

The victim was found on Monday (18/5) around 19:30 WITA, and campus security immediately reported the incident to the police.

“Before the incident, the victim had sent a voice message to another friend. The voice message was then forwarded to her parents,” he explained.

After the family received the voice message, the parents began searching for the victim around the campus. They could not find her.

“When the parents and the victim’s other friends went to the security post to request a key to the building in order to search inside, the security guard informed them that a victim had been found. So the parents and friends went to the hospital and found that the victim had indeed died,” he said.

Nevertheless, Ishaq said the exact cause of death is still under investigation.

“Regarding the cause of death, it is currently under investigation,” he added.
