Felling teaks

Felling teaks

From Neraca

A relative of mine in Gerhaji village, Kuningan, West Java, asked me about a case concerning the cutting of teakwood. I was surprised to hear the story and I wished to know the regulation.

My relative has a piece of land on which there are 60 teak trees. He wished to sell the land including the trees. But, unexpectedly the would-be buyer raised a condition. He would be willing to buy the piece of land together with the trees provided there was a certificate from the police. According to him, he would be arrested if he later cut the teak trees without license.

My question is: Is there a regulation concerning this matter? And why doesn't the government inform the community about it? I would like to know the right procedures for obtaining permission and the cost involved. I hope the Ministry of Forestry will explain this issue.
