Fee for Renouncing Indonesian Citizenship Raised to Rp 5 Million

The government has officially increased the fee for renouncing Indonesian citizenship from Rp 1 million to Rp 5 million. This provision is regulated in Government Regulation (PP) Number 30 of 2026 concerning Types and Tariffs of Non-Tax State Revenue. Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas stated that the tariff for renouncing citizenship had not changed for approximately a decade. He said the increase does not affect public interest, evidenced by the fact that there are currently around 300 applications for renunciation of WNI status. “Likewise, the tariff increase for renouncing citizenship. There are approximately 300 applications so far. So, it has no effect on the general public, from Rp 1 million to Rp 5 million,” Supratman said at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday (21/7/2026). Supratman explained that one reason for the tariff adjustment is to support digital transformation within the Ministry of Law. Currently, the ministry manages around 530 public services, all of which are being directed to be digital-based, thus requiring operational and system maintenance costs. “Why? One, we are building a system. The Ministry of Law is now transforming into a ministry with a digitalisation system, full digitalisation. This equipment must be maintained. Because it does not depend on just one service. We have 530 public services that must be maintained,” he explained. Supratman stressed that the public need not worry about the tariff adjustment. According to him, applicants for the citizenship renunciation service generally have financial capability, while the impact on low-income communities is almost non-existent. “Therefore, I hope this is not seen as a sudden decision. Secondly, those who want to renounce their citizenship are certainly people who have the financial capability. But we are not talking about who is capable and who is not. The impact on the lower class is almost non-existent,” Supratman concluded. Requirements for Renouncing WNI Status Supratman emphasised that the process of renouncing WNI status cannot be done easily. One of the requirements is that the applicant must not have tax arrears or be involved in a criminal case. In addition, every application for renunciation of citizenship must go through discussions with around 14 to 15 ministries and agencies to ensure all requirements are met. “First, we must ensure that the person wishing to renounce citizenship has no tax arrears, no involvement in ongoing criminal cases. This must be confirmed among 14-15 ministries and agencies,” Supratman said. He denied assumptions on social media that the government is making it difficult for people who want to renounce their WNI status, although not all of the 300 applications for renunciation of citizenship were approved by the government for various reasons. Supratman stated that the procedures for both obtaining and renouncing WNI status are now increasingly strict. In addition to raising the fee for renouncing citizenship, the government also increased the fee for obtaining Indonesian citizenship from the previous Rp 50 million to Rp 75 million. “Just imagine, there are only 300 people, and even then, not all are necessarily approved. Do you think it’s that easy to apply to become an Indonesian citizen? It is not easy to become an Indonesian citizen,” Supratman concluded.
