Fee for Renouncing Indonesian Citizenship Raised to Rp 5 Million
The government has officially raised the fee for renouncing Indonesian citizen (WNI) status from Rp 1 million to Rp 5 million. The provision is set out in Government Regulation (PP) Number 30 of 2026 on the Types and Tariffs of Non-Tax State Revenues (PNBP).
Quoted by detikFinance, Law Minister (Menkum) Supratman Andi Agtas said the fee for renouncing citizenship had not changed for roughly a decade. According to him, the increase has not affected public interest, as evidenced by the roughly 300 applications for release of WNI status to date.
“The same goes for the increase in the fee for renouncing citizenship. There are approximately 300 applications so far, some 300 people. So there is no impact on the general public, from Rp 1 million to Rp 5 million,” Supratman said at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/7/2026).
Supratman explained that one reason for the tariff adjustment is to support digital transformation within the Ministry of Law. The ministry currently manages around 530 public services, all of which are being directed towards a digital base and therefore require operational and system maintenance costs.
“Why? First, we are building a system. The Ministry of Law is now transforming into a ministry with digitalisation, full digitalisation. These tools must be maintained. Because it is not dependent on just one service. We have 530 public services that must be safeguarded,” he explained.
Supratman stressed that the public need not worry about the adjustment. According to him, applicants for citizenship renunciation generally have financial means, whilst the impact on low-income communities is virtually non-existent.
“Therefore I hope this is not seen as a sudden decision. Secondly, those who wish to relinquish their citizenship are certainly people with financial capacity. But we are not discussing who is able and who is not. The impact on lower-income communities is almost non-existent,” Supratman concluded.
Requirements for relinquishing WNI status
Supratman affirmed that the process of renouncing WNI status can no longer be done easily. One requirement is that applicants must not have outstanding tax debts nor be involved in criminal cases.
In addition, every application for citizenship renunciation must go through deliberation with around 14 to 15 ministries and agencies to ensure all requirements have been met.
“Firstly, we must ensure that the person who wishes to relinquish their citizenship has no tax arrears and no involvement in ongoing criminal cases. This must be verified among 14-15 ministries and agencies,” Supratman added.
He rejected claims circulating on social media that the government is making it harder for people to relinquish WNI status. Even so, not all of the 300 applications for citizenship renunciation have been approved by the government, for various reasons.
Supratman said the procedures for both acquiring and relinquishing WNI status are now being tightened. In addition to raising the fee for renouncing citizenship, the government has also increased the fee for becoming an Indonesian citizen from Rp 50 million to Rp 75 million.
“I say, imagine only 300 people, and even then not all are necessarily approved. Is becoming an Indonesian citizen really that easy? It is certainly not easy to become an Indonesian citizen,” Supratman concluded.
