Solo — Many modern cars are now equipped with features designed to help improve fuel efficiency. These features not only make fuel consumption more economical but also help drivers maintain a driving style that is more efficient for daily use. Nevertheless, the use of fuel-saving features must be balanced with proper driving.

Iwan, owner of the Iwan Motor workshop in Solo, says one of the most common features found on modern cars is the ECO mode. However, in his view, the saving effect isn’t always substantial.

He explained that average fuel savings from ECO mode range from 5 to 15 percent, depending on driving style and road conditions.

“Typically you can save around 5–15 percent depending on driving style and road conditions,” Iwan said.

He regards ECO mode as more properly considered as an addition to help the car’s character become more fuel-efficient, not the primary fuel-saving solution.

“ECO mode helps with fuel efficiency, but its nature is as an addition to keep the car’s character more economical. Its impact remains smaller than driving style, proper tyre pressure, a well-functioning engine, and traffic conditions,” Iwan said.

In addition to ECO mode, there are other features that also help improve fuel efficiency in modern cars.

“The engine automatically stops when the car stops, such as at red lights or in traffic, and restarts when the pedal is released. This helps reduce fuel consumption in the city,” Iwan said.

He says the ISS feature is quite effective in urban traffic conditions that are often stop-and-go because the engine does not stay on when the vehicle is stationary.

Another feature that helps fuel efficiency is cruise control. This system helps keep the vehicle’s speed steady, especially on motorways.

“Cruise control helps keep speed steady on the highway, so fuel consumption is more efficient than constantly accelerating and decelerating,” Iwan said.

“Eco indicator helps drivers maintain a driving style that remains economical,” Iwan said.

Although there are various efficiency-supporting features, Iwan reminded that the biggest factor affecting fuel consumption still comes from driver habits.

Aggressive acceleration, sudden braking, and vehicle conditions not in prime condition can still make fuel consumption wasteful.
