FBI Director Returns Smuggled Indonesian Artefacts to President Prabowo

President Prabowo Subianto received a collection of repatriated cultural artefacts directly from FBI Director Kash Patel in Jakarta on Wednesday. The artefacts had been illegally smuggled out of Indonesia to the United States.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon explained that the handover was part of ongoing repatriation cooperation between the Indonesian government and the FBI. The returned items originate from Papua and represent the cultural heritage of the Dani and Asmat communities, as well as the Lake Sentani region.

“After conducting provenance research, these cultural objects, which were smuggled illegally to the United States, were returned and brought directly by Mr. Kash Patel to President Prabowo Subianto,” Fadli Zon stated.

He emphasised that the artefacts hold significant historical and cultural value for Indonesia, describing the repatriation as an effort to restore the nation’s cultural sovereignty. The FBI has previously assisted in returning various stolen Indonesian artefacts, including bronze statues and items from other cultural sites.

Fadli Zon announced that the repatriated objects will be exhibited at the National Museum to allow the public to view and study them. He expressed hope that cooperation with the FBI on the restitution of cultural objects would grow stronger, supported by the Ministry of State Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
