Favourite Aircraft Seats Revealed, Many Passengers Willing to Pay Extra Fees
Sitting for hours inside an aircraft has made many travellers increasingly selective about their seat choices. It is no longer just about being near a window or an aisle; comfort during a flight has become the top priority, with many willing to pay extra to secure it.
A recent report from Upgraded Points, a US-based travel platform that regularly releases surveys regarding flight experiences and traveller habits, shows a new trend among passengers. In the report released in April 2026, travellers are said to prefer spending money on a comfortable journey rather than on luxury experiences during their holidays.
For many travellers, a comfortable journey is seen as a way to reduce stress, especially when facing long-haul flights, lengthy transits, or exhausting airport queues. “Travellers now value comfort and convenience more than luxury,” the report stated.
One of the primary concerns for passengers is their seating position within the aircraft cabin. Many passengers are willing to pay extra to avoid middle seats, particularly on long-duration flights. This phenomenon is also evident in the increasing popularity of premium economy services offered by various airlines in recent years.
Despite the growing trend towards comfort, window seats remain a favourite for many. In a 2024 Upgraded Points study involving over 3,100 respondents in the United States, as reported by Conde Nast Traveler, approximately 66 per cent of passengers chose window seats over aisle or middle seats. The window position is considered more comfortable for sleeping, as passengers can lean against the cabin wall, while also offering views during the flight.
The study also identified seat 1A on Boeing 737-800 aircraft as the most coveted position, as it offers more legroom and faster exit from the aircraft. Furthermore, the 2024 Upgraded Points study noted that approximately 41 per cent of respondents consider safety factors before selecting a seat. Choosing an aircraft seat is no longer a trivial decision for many travellers; for some, the seating position can determine whether a journey feels comfortable or exhausting from the very start of the flight.
