The King of Morocco has appointed a new Prime Minister. It is Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, the Mayor of Marrakesh, who is now the first female PM.

As reported by AFP on Wednesday (30/09/2026), the appointment was announced by the royal cabinet after her party won the parliamentary general election last week.

Her centre-right party, the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM), dominated the vote count, winning 97 out of 395 seats in the House of Representatives. This result was 31 seats ahead of its closest competitor, despite the election being marked by the lowest voter turnout in two decades.

The royal cabinet stated that King Mohammed VI has now tasked the 50-year-old, who also previously served as the Minister of Housing, to “form a new government.”

In a televised speech, El Mansouri described her appointment as a “truly historic” event. According to her, this new chapter is a source of pride for all Moroccan women.

“For the first time in our country’s history, a woman bears the responsibility of leading the government,” she said.

“This is a source of pride not only for me but for all Moroccan women,” she added.

It is noted that El Mansouri joined PAM in 2008, the year the party was founded by the current royal advisor, Fouad Ali El Himma, to serve as a counterweight to Islamist movements in the country. She was also the first woman to serve as the Mayor of Marrakesh. She won the position in 2009, lost it six years later, and reclaimed it in 2021.
