Father behind bars marries off daughter at Yogyakarta Prison

Yogyakarta Class IIA Correctional Facility has facilitated the marriage ceremony of an inmate’s daughter as part of fulfilling prisoners’ rights to maintain their family roles. Head of Yogyakarta Class IIA Prison, Marjiyanto, stated in Yogyakarta on Saturday that facilitating the wedding procession demonstrates the prison’s commitment to meeting the basic rights of inmates, including carrying out responsibilities as a family head. “The implementation of this wedding procession is a tangible manifestation of the prison’s commitment to fulfilling the basic rights of inmates,” Marjiyanto said. The inmate, identified by the initials RAS, had the opportunity to personally marry off his daughter while still undergoing his rehabilitation period. The marriage contract procession took place at the Al-Fajar Mosque within the Yogyakarta Class IIA Prison complex. According to Marjiyanto, Yogyakarta Prison supports the fulfilment of inmates’ basic rights as part of the services provided to every prisoner. “This service runs as it should, not something that needs to be specially prepared or made to seem excessive,” he stated. “Yogyakarta Prison is always ready to facilitate the basic rights and religious worship of inmates whenever needed, while of course complying with applicable security procedures,” Marjiyanto said. He added that both the bride and groom and their families appeared happy during the simple wedding procession held within the prison grounds. According to him, the implementation of the marriage contract serves as evidence that rehabilitation at Yogyakarta Prison does not sever family ties or a father’s social responsibilities.
