Father a suspect in SMP 56 case

JAKARTA: The father of a second grade student at SMP 56 state junior high school in Melawai, South Jakarta, was named a suspect by the Jakarta Police, for allegedly running the school without license.

Jonny Elian, the SMP 56 school committee chairman, was summoned by the police on Friday for questioning. He was the second suspect summoned after teacher Nurlaila.

"I don't understand why the police have declared me a suspect. As far as I know, the school is legal," he said.

Jonny was questioned by the police following the city administration's complaint that Nurlaila, supported by students' parents, had maintained academic activities at the school and allegedly allowed admission to the school without the administration's consent. -- JP
