JAKARTA - The initiative to electrify urban transport (angkot) in Jakarta through the Jaklingko programme continues to advance. One brand that has captured attention is Foton Indonesia with its eTruckMate electric angkot version.

Although it has undergone testing for several months, operational units of the eTruckMate electric angkot have yet to be seen on the streets of the capital.

Meanwhile, competitors such as the Wuling Mitra EV are also entering the testing radar of PT Transportasi Jakarta (TransJakarta).

“So if we’re looking for a wide cabin, it’s actually not quite right. The eTruckMate is more suitable, its width is more appropriate for our urban size,” said Edi at Giicomvec on Wednesday (8/4/2026).

Although superior in dimensions, Edi acknowledged that there are still several technical aspects that need improvement, particularly the battery sector. Currently, Foton is working to adjust the capacity so that its range becomes more competitive.

“We’re challenged because other brands have higher (range), so we want to try towards that as well, of course with prices that remain competitive. We’re trying to improve the battery,” said Edi.

This development process unfortunately cannot proceed instantly. As the distributor in Indonesia, Foton Indonesia must coordinate intensively with their principal in China regarding research and development.

“I can’t promise when because this involves the principal, R&D operating there. On the operational side, we only convey the trial results and what is requested by TransJakarta to them,” said Edi.

Although unable to confirm the debut date, Edi emphasised that Foton Indonesia continues to push for the development process to be accelerated, given the large market potential and government regulatory support for electric-based mass transportation.

“We’re pushing because there’s demand, there’s opportunity here. If we’re late, other brands will enter. This product should become (pass the selection),” said Edi.
