Fatal Jeep Accident at Bromo: Brake Failure on S-Curve Claims Two Lives
The Bromo tourist area has been struck by tragedy once again. A fatal accident involving a Toyota Hardtop tourist jeep occurred on the extreme route to the Sea of Sand, specifically at the ‘Letter S’ bend in Wonokitri Village, Tosari District, Pasuruan Regency, on Friday, 29 May 2026. The incident claimed two lives and left three others injured.
The single-vehicle crash is strongly suspected to have been caused by brake failure while navigating a steep descent. The location is known as one of the most hazardous points for drivers due to its sharp curves and steep incline.
According to Pasuruan Regency Traffic Police (Satlantas), the jeep, bearing licence plate BG 1478 EF, was travelling from Penanjakan towards the Sea of Sand around 6:30 AM WIB. As it entered the descending Letter S bend, the driver reportedly lost control.
The driver attempted to swerve right to avoid another vehicle ahead, but the uncontrolled jeep slammed into a cliff before rolling over on the road. The severe impact ejected the driver and one passenger from the cabin.
Police have identified all victims aboard the doomed jeep. All injured individuals are receiving intensive treatment at Sukapura Community Health Centre and Dr. Mohamad Saleh Probolinggo Regional Hospital. Most of the group were families en route to a wedding engagement ceremony in East Java.
Pasuruan Regency Police Chief AKBP Harto Agung Cahyono has urged all tourist transport service providers to conduct regular technical checks, particularly on braking systems and tyres, given Bromo’s extremely challenging terrain.
