Fatal Crash on Surabaya-Mojokerto Road, Two Motorcyclists Killed

A fatal accident involving a container truck, a Honda Brio, and two motorcycles occurred on the Surabaya-Mojokerto Highway, specifically in the Bakungtemenggungan area, Balongbendo District, Sidoarjo Regency, on Wednesday (10/6) morning. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of two motorcyclists at the scene.

The deceased have been identified as Rizal Afifudin, a resident of Wringinpitu, Mojokerto Regency, and Sugito, a resident of Balongbendo, Sidoarjo Regency. Both victims passed away after sustaining severe injuries from the impact of the vehicles.

The chronology of the accident began when a container truck, driven by Nanang, a resident of Mojoagung, Jombang, was travelling from the direction of Surabaya towards Mojokerto. Upon reaching the scene, a Honda Brio was travelling from the opposite direction. The driver of the Brio is suspected to have been experiencing extreme drowsiness, causing the car to suddenly swerve to the right into the lane occupied by the truck.

“Initially, the Brio swerved right and hit my car, then moved left and then right, but it could not recover and hit the wall. The Brio driver was sleepy,” said Nanang, the container truck driver, at the scene.

Seeing the Brio enter his lane, Nanang reflexively swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision. However, this emergency manoeuvre caused the truck to lose control. The container truck subsequently struck two motorcycles passing through the area before finally coming to a halt after crashing into a residential fence by the roadside, which was destroyed in the process.

Officers arriving at the scene immediately evacuated the bodies of Rizal and Sugito to the mortuary of Anwar Medika Hospital, Krian, Sidoarjo. Meanwhile, Nanang, the truck driver, sustained only leg injuries and was taken into custody by the police for further questioning. The traffic accident case is currently being handled by the Law Enforcement Unit of the Sidoarjo City Police. Police are conducting an in-depth investigation to determine the primary cause of the accident. All vehicles involved, including the container truck and the Honda Brio, have been secured as evidence for the investigation process.
