Fatal Bullying Case in Sragen: KPAI Demands Legal Process in Line with Child Protection Laws

The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has requested that law enforcement process a bullying case against a child that resulted in death in Sragen Regency, Central Java, guided by the Child Protection Law and the Juvenile Justice System Law (SPPA). “We appreciate the Sragen Police’s quick action. However, we also hope that in accordance with Article 59A of Law No. 35 of 2014 on Child Protection, the process must be swift. Especially since the victim has passed away and the perpetrator is still a minor, it must consider the Juvenile Justice System Law,” said KPAI member Diyah Puspitarini on Friday (24/4/2026). KPAI also requested that the local government provide psychological support to the victim’s family. “KPAI suggests that the UPTD PPA (Regional Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children) provide psychological support to the victim’s family. Because KPAI sees that the victim’s mother and family need psychological support,” said Diyah. In addition, the local Social Services Office is requested to provide social assistance to the victim’s family as mandated by Law No. 35 of 2014 on Child Protection. KPAI also requests psychosocial support for the seven children who witnessed the case. “KPAI suggests psychosocial support for the seven witnesses who saw the incident. Because these seven witnesses have not yet received psychological support. These witnesses are also children in conflict with the law and have experienced trauma. Therefore, KPAI requests assistance from all stakeholders to support the services that must be received by the child witnesses,” said Diyah. Previously, a junior high school student with initials WAP (14) in Sragen Regency died on Tuesday (7/4/2026), allegedly due to bullying by his peer with initials DTP (14). The incident began when the victim was attending an IPS lesson in his class, while the perpetrator was attending Mathematics in another class. However, because there was no teacher supervising, the students eventually went out of class. The victim and perpetrator then joked around, which turned into mutual taunting and ended in a fight. Due to the violence inflicted on him, the victim fainted at school, then was taken to the local health centre. However, tragically, the victim eventually died. The Sragen Police have escalated the case to the investigation stage and designated DTP as a child in conflict with the law (AKH). DTP is currently at a safe house.
