Fast Track to Top Global Universities Opened, Indonesia Partners with University of Sydney

The Indonesian government is opening wider pathways for national students to penetrate world-class universities. This step is marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) and the University of Sydney, one of Australia’s leading global institutions. The agreement was signed by Acting Secretary General of Kemdiktisaintek Badri Munir Sukoco and Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Sydney Mark Scott in Jakarta on Tuesday (14/4). The signing was witnessed by delegations from both parties as well as representatives from the Australian Embassy. Badri emphasised that Australia is a strategic partner for Indonesia, particularly in the development of higher education, science, and technology. He stated that the government is focusing on building superior human resources capable of meeting the needs of national priority sectors. “Higher education must have a real impact. This collaboration is a concrete step to prepare talent that can contribute to food security, energy, maritime, and health,” Badri said in his official statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. Through this partnership, opportunities for Indonesian students to pursue undergraduate to postgraduate education at the University of Sydney are increasingly open. The joint financing scheme prepared is expected to reach more young talents who have previously been hindered by access and costs. This programme is also part of the implementation of the Garuda Scholarship, a national priority initiative resulting from collaboration between Kemdiktisaintek and the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP). Its focus is to strengthen superior talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while supporting strategic sectors such as digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and industrial downstreaming. In addition, Kemdiktisaintek is promoting the integration of this programme with the Garuda Elite School as a long-term strategy. This effort is aimed at building a sustainable education ecosystem, from secondary level to world-class universities.
