Fashion Experts Highlight Traditional Elements in Cabinet Secretary Teddy's Attire at Indonesia's 81st Independence Day

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya drew public attention by wearing a brown suit while attending the 81st Independence Day commemoration on Monday (17/8). The choice of attire was considered to convey a stronger traditional nuance compared with typical formal state clothing.

Designer and Advisory of the Indonesian Fashion Chamber (IFC), Ali Charisma, assessed that Cabinet Secretary Teddy’s appearance was visually quite appealing because it looked different. In his view, the brown colour gives an impression of modesty, naturalness, warmth, and is very close to the character of Nusantara cultural materials.

“In my opinion, visually the Cabinet Secretary’s attire is quite attractive because it looks different and more strongly carries a traditional nuance,” said Ali, as quoted from Antara on Monday (17/8).

Nevertheless, Ali cautioned against rushing to conclude that there was a particular symbolic meaning behind the colour choice without an official explanation. From a fashion perspective, he saw the use of accessories such as a jasmine garland as providing a strong cultural touch without having to change the entire outfit into traditional dress.

In line with Ali, the Chairperson of the Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs Association (APPMI) Jakarta, Dana Duriyatna, said the brown colour falls into the earth tone category. This colour symbolises readiness to work, a down-to-earth attitude, toughness, and high discipline.

“This colour choice highlights the operational function of a Cabinet Secretary who must move tactically in the field for the smooth running of state agendas,” said Dana.

Dana added that the outfit is highly functional and comfortable for field activities, such as inspecting troop readiness or greeting the public. This was considered in line with Teddy’s role as part of the core organising committee for the 81st Independence Day commemoration.
