Farhan Regrets Riotous Actions by Black-Clad Masses During May Day in Bandung
Bandung (ANTARA) - Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan has expressed regret over the actions of a black-clad mob that caused chaos by damaging and burning public facilities during the International Labour Day or May Day 2026 celebrations in the Tamansari area of Bandung. “Freedom of expression is certainly appreciated, but when it turns into a riot, it must be stopped,” Farhan said in Bandung on Monday. Farhan stated that the Bandung City Government, along with security forces, had anticipated potential disruptions since Friday night (1/5). He emphasised that freedom of expression remains respected and protected. However, actions leading to riots and violating regulations cannot be justified. “We appreciate the unfurling of banners, but once the burning starts, it must certainly be prevented. The most pitiful are the small shops that were also burned. This is what we must protect,” Farhan said. Previously, the West Java Regional Police (Polda) named six individuals as suspects out of seven who were secured following the riotous action during the International Labour Day or May Day 2026 in Bandung City. “The action resulted in the burning of one videotron unit, one police post, as well as damage to public facilities in the form of traffic lights,” said Hendra. He explained that the six suspects, who are mostly students—namely MRN (21), MRA (17), RS (19), MFNA (19), FAP (21), and HIS (20)—were named after intensive examinations. “They were proven to have committed criminal acts of arson, incitement, and destruction jointly,” he stated.
