Bandung — Farabi El Fouz, a member of Commission V of the West Java DPRD, emphasises the importance of serious attention to mental health amid the increasingly complex dynamics of public life. He says mental health is an essential part of quality of life that must be safeguarded, as much as physical health.

Farabi notes that public awareness of mental health is currently increasing. However, broader education is needed so that people do not hesitate to seek help when experiencing psychological pressure.

He regards the stigma surrounding mental health issues as still a challenge to be overcome together.

“Too often mental health issues are considered trivial or even taboo to discuss. In fact, if not properly addressed, these conditions can affect productivity, social relationships, and a person’s quality of life,” Farabi said on Sunday (8 March 2026).

As a member of Commission V which covers education, health, and social welfare sectors, Farabi says local government should continue strengthening mental health service programmes that are easily accessible to the public.

This includes through provision of professionals such as psychologists and counsellors, as well as strengthening health services at primary health care facilities and, where necessary, referrals to psychiatrists.

He also urged synergy between government, educational institutions, health workers, and the community in building a more caring environment for mental health.

According to him, the role of families and the surrounding environment is vital in providing support to individuals experiencing psychological pressure.

Farabi added that the younger generation is particularly vulnerable to pressures, both from the educational environment and work, as well as the influence of social media.

Therefore, education about the importance of maintaining mental health should be taught from an early age. A person is considered healthy when in a normal state; not only physically but mentally as well. If the body is in good condition but the mind is not healthy, one cannot be said to be healthy.

“Awareness of maintaining mental health must become part of the community’s lifestyle. With a healthy mind, a person will be better able to face life’s challenges in a positive and productive way,” he said.

He hopes that efforts to improve services and education about mental health can be strengthened so that people in West Java become more aware of the importance of balancing physical and mental health.
