Fans turn on host failures

JAKARTA (JP): Local supporters this week have lived up to their reputation of being some of the most vociferous and partisan in the world.

Host athletes have usually been spurred on to greater heights and many visiting stars have crumbled under the nonstop stream of invective pouring forth from the stands.

But it has not always been the case.

In the heats of the 200 meters men's breastroke, Indonesian swimmers Denny Kurniawan and Audy Octavian were struggling in sixth and seventh places, miles behind the leader, Thailand's Ratapong Sirisanont.

Disappointed by their hopes' performance, the supporters shouted: "Hey, just use the crawl, not the breaststroke!" (08)
