Family Reveals Details of Deaf Kupang Woman Raped and Three Months Pregnant
Family members have revealed new details regarding the alleged rape of a deaf 17-year-old woman identified as NT in Kota Lama district, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). NT is currently three months pregnant.
DetikBali visited NT at her home on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, in the afternoon. NT and her two siblings have been living with their aunt, identified as MT (56), since their parents left to seek work elsewhere. MT often works as a domestic helper and takes on odd jobs to support her three nieces and nephews.
“I’ve been raising them since they were very young because their father was going to work elsewhere,” MT said during the visit on Wednesday.
MT explained that NT and one of her sisters are disabled, while only the male sibling is physically healthy.
The alleged rape came to light when NT saw a neighbour walking past the house on Monday, 18 May. She screamed and gestured towards the suspect, indicating the genital area. This reaction was seen as a traumatic expression difficult to convey verbally, especially as NT is deaf.
“When she screamed, I asked why and she immediately pointed at the suspect and then at her thigh, followed by her genital area,” MT recounted, mimicking NT’s gestures. NT also hurriedly hid in her room upon seeing the neighbour, heightening MT’s suspicions.
MT said NT had been complaining of thigh and groin pain every night, which she initially thought was a sprain. However, NT’s physical condition began to change, including nausea and loss of appetite. Concerned, MT contacted a midwife in the family to check on NT, leading to the discovery of the pregnancy.
“After getting the results, I was shocked and extremely angry at the perpetrator,” MT added.
The case was reported to the East Nusa Tenggara Police (Polda NTT). MT hopes the case is handled seriously for justice. “We hope the case is processed swiftly so we can feel satisfied,” she said.
Previously, Margaritha Mauweni, Head of the Follow-up Section at the NTT Child and Women Protection Unit (UPTD PPA), stated the alleged rape case involving a disabled woman was officially reported to Polda NTT on Tuesday, 19 May. The victim’s family was accompanied by UPTD PPA NTT and LBH Surya NTT during the report.
Known as Itha, Margaritha explained that UPTD PPA NTT is providing psychological support for NT, with interpreters ready for further questioning at Polda NTT headquarters.
“We have also facilitated the family to LPSK (Witness and Victim Protection Agency) for reporting and protection,” Itha said.
Polda NTT’s Public Relations Chief, Commissioner Henry Novika Chandra, confirmed the police have received the sexual assault report involving a disabled woman. He stressed the case is being handled by the PPA and PPO Directorate investigators.
Based on initial statements from the victim’s family, Henry said the case emerged after NT pointed to a suspected perpetrator. He assured the investigation would be conducted professionally.
“The family has reported the incident to Polda NTT’s Public Service Desk for legal processing. We emphasise that this case will be handled professionally, prioritising the victim’s protection,” Henry said.
