Family of Student Victim of Stray Bullet in Gresik Demands Rp 1.8 Billion Compensation
The family of Darrell Fausta Hamdani (14), a student at SMPN 33 Gresik who is suspected to be a victim of a stray bullet from a Navy Marine soldier, is demanding compensation of Rp 1.8 billion from the Marine unit. The total demand of Rp 1.8 billion was submitted through a formal notice because the family feels the Marines lack good faith in guaranteeing the long-term recovery costs for the victim, who has suffered permanent disability in his hand. The victim’s mother, Dewi Murniati, detailed that the amount is divided into two parts: material compensation of Rp 300 million and immaterial compensation of Rp 1.5 billion. For the immaterial loss value, Dewi proposed Rp 1.5 billion because her son must bear the disability for life. Darrell’s left arm bone was shattered by the bullet and required pins, so his hand cannot be bent or straightened normally. “However, for the immaterial aspect, it does exist, and I mentioned Rp 1.5 billion there. Yes, that’s correct. Because no matter what, this child has to carry the disability for life,” said Dewi. Besides Darrell, Dewi mentioned another victim named Renheart who was also hit by a stray bullet in the back. However, since Renheart’s wound did not affect the bone and only lodged in the fat, the material claim amount is much smaller. “The second victim, because there is no deep wound or further surgery, only the costs that arise and those are minimal, so it’s about Rp 40 million,” she explained. She stated that the figures in the notice represent disappointment after two mediation sessions on 7 and 14 January 2026 reached a deadlock. In those mediations, the Marine side claimed they had no budget to secure the victims’ future. So far, Dewi acknowledged that the Marines have paid the initial surgery costs at Siti Khodijah Hospital amounting to Rp 32 million and provided a folder containing cash. However, she considers that cash amount very disproportionate to her child’s suffering.
