Family members die in landslide

MANADO, North Sulawesi: A 66-year-old widow and her 14-year- old granddaughter died when an early morning landslide buried their home in the Kleak subdistrict of Malalayang on Tuesday. Two other grandchildren were injured.

They were found trapped in their home covered in four meters of earth in the landslide-prone Linkungan V neighborhood, secretary of Malalayang administration office, A.L. Undap, said here on Wednesday.

The children lived with their grandmother Aneta Senduk, Undap was quoted by Antara as saying.

The granddaughter killed in the accident was identified as Sita Moningka. David Moningka, 9, and Kendi Senduk, 7, are being treated at Malalayang General Hospital, he said.

It was unclear whether Aneta and her grandchildren were the only people living in the home.

Manado Mayor LH Korah and senior officials visited the site and donated rice to people in the neighborhood. (bsr)
